Why do my outlets spark?

A tiny, brief blue spark when you unplug a device can be normal—the plug blades separate from live contacts and a quick arc appears. But repeated, large, or bright sparks, scorch marks, heat, a buzzing sound, or a burning smell are warning signs. Common causes include worn receptacles, loose wiring, short circuits, overloaded circuits, or moisture intrusion. If you notice any heat, discoloration, or odor, stop using that outlet and turn off the circuit if you can do so safely. Then schedule a pro to inspect and repair it. We replace worn receptacles, tighten connections, and can add GFCI/AFCI protection where appropriate. Learn more about safe repairs on Outlets & Switches or request help via Electrical Repair and Contact Us.

Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of your device—battery types and maintenance schedules vary. Many homeowners choose to test their alarms regularly and refresh batteries on a routine schedule to ensure reliability, and to replace any unit that chirps, fails a test, or is past its labeled lifespan. If you’re unsure what you have or how to maintain it, we can help identify your detectors, test them, and replace batteries or units as needed. See Smoke Detector Installation, or book a safety check through Electrical Inspections or our Contact Us page.

A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) outlet is designed to rapidly shut off power if it detects a difference between the current leaving and returning—an imbalance that may indicate electricity is flowing through a person or water path. That fast trip can help reduce shock risk in damp or wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, and outdoors. If your GFCI trips repeatedly, don’t ignore it—that’s a sign to evaluate the circuit and connected devices. We install and replace GFCIs, test them, and address underlying wiring problems. Start with Outlets & Switches or request a safety review via Electrical Inspections.

A quiet hum from normal electrical flow is common, but a sharp buzz, crackle, or any sound that changes under load can indicate loose connections, a failing breaker, corrosion, or an overloaded circuit. Heat, discoloration, visible arcing, or a burning smell are urgent red flags—back away and call a professional. Panels are not a DIY area; improper work can cause shocks or fires. We diagnose panel issues, replace failing breakers, and recommend repairs or upgrades when needed. Learn more at Electrical Panel Upgrade. If anything feels urgent (heat, odor, arcing), reach out through Emergency Electrician or Contact Us.

Level 2 home chargers draw significant current and typically require a dedicated circuit, correct wire size, proper grounding, and, in many areas, a permit and inspection. Because of shock and fire risks—and to protect your vehicle warranty and home insurance—most homeowners choose a licensed electrician. We assess panel capacity, plan the circuit route, install the charger to spec, and coordinate any required inspection. See our EV Charger Installation page for what’s involved, or schedule a site visit via Contact Us or Electrical Inspections.

Costs vary based on the home’s size, age, access to walls/attic/crawl spaces, existing wiring condition, grounding, panel capacity, and finish work. Without a walkthrough, any number would be a guess. We provide a written scope and pricing after evaluating your home, and we can stage work to fit your timeline. Financing is available, and all workmanship is covered by a one-year warranty. Start here: Wiring & Rewiring and Financing & Warranty. When you’re ready, request an estimate on Contact Us.
